Sequencing the human genome has been a very difficult task. The first human genome map released in 2003 was obtained by scientists from many countries around the world for more than a decade and cost about $3 billion. Since then, the scientific community has been developing faster, lower cost gene sequencing technologies.
Researchers at institutions such as the University of East Anglia reported that a complete human genome was detected using a small instrument called MinION. The advantage of this instrument is that the length of the sequence that can be measured each time is 8000 times that of the traditional method, which greatly reduces the complexity of assembling many shorter sequences into a complete genome.
In a statement, the University of East Anglia said that genome sequencing can be achieved with a portable device that is only the size of a mobile phone and costs only $1,000. One of the authors of the report, the school's scholar Justin O'Grady, said the technology could promote the application of personalized genome sequencing and is expected to be used to diagnose diseases such as cancer in the future.
