Helping diabetics manage their condition, the health-care platform Brook.ai receives $4 million in seed round financing

It is reported that more than 100 million Americans currently have type 2 diabetes or pre-diabetes. The impact of the disease on health, coupled with the high cost of treatment, are causing more and more influence on the US health care system.

This is a problem that is urgently needed for multiple solutions, and Seattle startup Brook. Ai is providing a solution. Brook has created a digital health platform that uses real-world data to help people with diabetes manage this chronic disease. To support the research, the startup has raised $4 million in seed round financing.

One of the most well-known investors in this round of investment is Independent Health, a health plan from Buffalo, New York, which announced a partnership with Brook on Tuesday.

The addition of Independent Health will bring good news to its approximately 380,000 patient members. As part of the partnership, Independent Crop President and CEO Michael Cropp will also join the Brooke Board of Directors.

Founder and CEO Oren Nissim said at a press conference. “Independent Health is largely in line with what consumers want in a “lightweight” way. This approach not only brings convenience to them, but more importantly, it also enables a high degree of personalization. Today, technology can be customized and Flexible processes for personalized treatment."

The Brook platform combines data on user activity, sleep and blood sugar levels with personal health guidance to help them avoid diabetes complications. A company spokesperson said the platform has integrated numerous devices and third-party services and will continue to expand its integration in the future.

Nissim is a long-time technical executive who founded Brook in 2015 with the company's chief product officer, Kit Macgillivray. In 2012, Nissim sold its former company, Israel Mobile and location services company Telmap, to Intel. Macgillivray is a long-term strategic consultant and executive who has worked with Nissim for many years at Telmap.

Nissim and Macgillivray are not the only people who want to use technology to treat diabetes. Just a few months ago, Bay Area company Livongo Health announced a partnership to expand its diabetes management platform to the Pacific Northwest and to build other chronic disease management platforms.

Brook is headquartered near Seattle's Pioneer Square and employs 15 people.
