If you only want to use Apple Watch as a health and fitness tracking device, then the $349 Apple Watch Sport is enough.

The Apple Watch is equipped with an accelerometer, gyroscope and optical heart rate sensor. For sensor tracking devices, these sensor combinations are standard. Products from Samsung, Sony, Microsoft, Fitbit, Basis, and Mio are also equipped with optical heart rate sensors.
The Apple Watch does not have a built-in GPS chip. If you want to use GPS while running or cycling, you need the help of the iPhone. But the Apple Watch's pedometer is very accurate, and it can accurately record the running distance even without the iPhone.
Apple Watch is not waterproof. In fact, most current smart watches are not really waterproof, except for Pebble and Sony SmartWatch 3. If you want to swim with it, it's best to consider other products.
Apple Watch is currently unable to track sleep conditions. I also suspect that it can track the activity of the user during sleep based on the current sensor combination.
For outdoor sports enthusiasts, also remind the Apple Watch screen. Its screen looks very beautiful indoors, but in the case of direct sunlight, even if the brightness is raised the highest, it is still very difficult to see the screen clearly.
