American researchers have found that the presence of bacteria on the eyeballs of contact lenses is similar to that of eyelids, and people who do not wear contact lenses do not.

New York University’s Langon Medical Center extracted 9 eyeglasses and eyelids from those who wear contact lenses and 11 who did not wear contact lenses. They found methyl bacilli, lactic acid bacteria, Acinetobacter and the surface of the eyeballs that often wear contact lenses. The proportion of Pseudomonas aeruginosa is three times that of those who do not wear contact lenses. The microscopic condition of their eyeballs is more like eyelids than the eyeballs of those who don't wear contact lenses.

Research leader Maria Gloria Dominguez-Bello said it is not clear whether this is because the finger touches the eye when wearing contact lenses, or because the contact lens changes the immune system of the eye. Anyway, "These findings help scientists better solve a long-term puzzle, that is, people who wear contact lenses are more prone to eyeball infections."

The study also found that people who don't wear contact lenses have more staphylococcus on their eyeballs. The researchers reported their findings at the annual meeting of the American Society for Microbiology on May 31.
