New medical robots can navigate autonomously in the body

US researchers published a report in the journal Science and Robotics on the 24th that they have developed a micro-medical robot that can navigate autonomously around the heart, helping surgeons complete complex heart surgery.

Studies have shown that in a heart valve repair procedure performed on an animal, a machine catheter uses artificial intelligence and other techniques to accurately locate the target without manual guidance. The heart surgeon then remotely repairs the leak.

One of the authors, Pierre Dupont, director of pediatric cardiac bioengineering at Boston Children's Hospital in the United States, said that this is the first medical robot he knows that can navigate autonomously to find a target location in the body. The machine catheter can reach millimeter-level targets in a blood-filled beating heart and performs quite well.

The robot is equipped with a tactile sensor, a miniature camera on the top, and can be “sampling” like an insect tentacles or a mouse beard. It can use machine learning and image processing techniques to identify the type of tissue being touched in a “unfamiliar” dark environment. , where you are, and determine the direction of travel.

Researchers say the robot helps relieve doctor fatigue and allows doctors to focus on more complex surgical procedures. Researchers hope that in the future, global cooperation will be carried out, data will be collected, and algorithms will be continuously trained to make medical robots smarter.
