Toshiba Corporation of Japan has developed a brain chip that can be used for deep learning of artificial intelligence. This 1.9 mm brain chip integrates 32,000 electronic circuits like brain cells. These circuits have their own computing unit and supporting storage unit. They can process a large number of continuous analog data signals in parallel and perform data characteristics. Learning, many circuits in the same brain chip are coordinated, and finally form a system like a brain neural circuit, completing the complex calculation, processing and deep learning tasks of a large amount of information data required for artificial intelligence.
Although the brain chip adopts a direct processing method for continuous analog signals, the local calculation accuracy is lower than that of the existing chips for digitizing the electrical signals by "0" and "1", but the brain chip can pass the pair. Deep learning of a large number of continuous analog data yields no worse results than digital chips.
In theory, the power consumption of brain-type chips is only one-thousandth of the power consumption of existing processors. In 2014, IBM and other companies have developed a brain-type chip. The brain chip released by Toshiba uses a different structure from the IBM brain chip. It consumes less energy and can be completed in 1 second with 1w of power. About 48.5 trillion calculations.
In the past, the use of artificial intelligence to deep-searn large amounts of data requires a combination of multiple high-performance computers. Even the graphics processor GPUs that were later tried to perform large-scale data parallel processing are difficult to calculate complete artificial intelligence. The system is installed inside a surveillance camera, a small drone, an autonomous vehicle, etc., which requires high simplification, and completes real-time deep learning processing of information collected on the spot, and the emergence of a brain chip will make it possible. Toshiba intends to make this brain chip practical in a few years.
